Most airsoft-safe models, like those from Enola Gaye, are "cold-burning." While they still generate internal heat, they do not produce an external flame, making them much safer for use around dry brush or gear. "Hot-burning" military or industrial smokes can be fire hazards and are generally banned at most airsoft fields.

Generally, no. Most fields prohibit smoke indoors because it can quickly become too thick to see through, creating a safety hazard for players navigating stairs or obstacles. Additionally, inhaling concentrated smoke in an enclosed space can cause respiratory irritation. Always check your local field rules before popping smoke indoors.

Tactically, yes. White and grey smoke are the most common for simple concealment. Vibrant colors like red, blue, or orange are often used for signaling (marking an extraction point or a captured objective). Brightly colored smoke can also stain light-colored gear or clothing, so toss them with care.
