Tokyo Marui just changed the game again. Unveiled late in 2025 and hitting shelves now in early 2026, the Tokyo Marui EVOLT is being hailed as the "AEG 2.0." For those of us at District Airsoft, it’s one of the most exciting technical leaps we’ve seen in years, moving away from the aging Version 2 gearbox design that has dominated the industry for decades.
But for our Canadian community, there is a major catch. Before we dive into the tech, let’s address the elephant in the room.
Will the EVOLT Make it to Canada?
As many of you know, Canadian customs laws regarding airsoft are... unique. To be legally imported into Canada as an "unregulated firearm," an airsoft gun must fire between 366 FPS and 500 FPS with a 0.20g BB.
The problem? Tokyo Marui builds their guns to comply with strict Japanese power limits, which cap performance at under 1.0 Joule (usually around 280–300 FPS). Under current CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) regulations, any realistic airsoft gun shooting under 366 FPS is classified as a "prohibited replica."
We are not yet sure if or when the EVOLT will be available on the Canadian market. Unless Tokyo Marui produces a specific "Export Version" with a higher-velocity spring, or Canadian distributors find a way to have them modified and certified before they hit the border, these might remain a "forbidden fruit" for us up north for the time being.
What Makes the EVOLT Special?
If you can get your hands on one, the EVOLT platform is a total rebuild of how an electric airsoft gun works. Here are the highlights:
-
The Split Gearbox: Finally, TM has adopted a split gearbox design. This makes maintenance a breeze! You can hinge the upper receiver open just like a real M4 to access the cylinder and piston group.

-
M-System Type 2: This is a sophisticated magnetic fire-control system. It monitors the gearbox, motor load, and selector position in real-time, providing built-in protection against jams and battery drainage.
-
Real-Size Ergonomics: Because of the new compact gearbox design, the pistol grip is now "real-steel" sized. No more bulky, oversized AEG grips.
-
No-Spill Magazines: The new EVOLT magazines feature a "shutter" system. When you pull the mag out, it doesn't dump three or four BBs onto the ground. It’s a small change, but a huge quality-of-life upgrade.

-
Recoil vs. Non-Recoil: TM is launching two versions. The M4A1 Carbine is a high-performance recoilless model, while the FPR Mk IV features a 300g recoil weight in the buffer tube for maximum realism.

Final Thoughts
The EVOLT represents Tokyo Marui’s vision for the next 30 years of airsoft. It’s smarter, more realistic, and easier to work on. We are keeping a close watch on importation news and will update you the second we hear anything about a Canada-compliant version.
